This is my favorite of the set of photos I took during the opening of the City Creek Shopping in 2012.
As you can see, in the upper left hand corner, there are two very visible hands at work over ZCMI.
Historically, ZCMI was the first full scale mall. The entity was owned by the LDS Church and had the goal of monopolizing trade. The idea of huge stores that dominated commerce quickly became the norm.
Today Salt Lake is developed around the mall concept. Most of downtown is owned by a single entity that rents out space in the City Creek Shopping Center to the major chains such as Macy's.
